As demand for local food continues to grow, so too have the opportunities for America’s farmers to market fresh food directly to the consumer. According to statistics recently released by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), farmers markets and farm stands account for roughly $2 billion of the $3 billion that Americans spend annually on farm-direct products . This revenue, in turn, supports the livelihoods of more than 165,000 mostly small and mid-sized farms and ranches.
The Monticello Farmers Market officially began in 2016, but many of it's vendors have been peddling their produce and goods for over 10 years downtown. The Market currently hosts 8 farmers selling a wide variety of products, including in-season fresh local produce, herbs, honey, maple syrup, jams, jellies, preserves, ciders and breads. The Market also hosts several Non For Profits throughout the season and homemade craft vendors as well. The Monticello Farmers Market also accepts SNAP/EBT, WIC and Senior WIC vouchers. The Market also partners with Purdue Extention, Purdue's FOODLINK and is a member of the Hoosier Farmers Market Association and National Farmers Market Association.
Remember eat fresh by buying local.
Who doesn't like fresh Indiana Sweet Corn, Cantaloupe and Watermelon? Well it's all coming into season and you can find it at both our Tuesday and Saturday Markets. Another, summer favorite of mine, the good ole BLT sandwich. Local tomatoes are slow to ripen this year due to the unusual amounts of rainfall we have been receiving. Be patient with our vendors and remember they are trying their best to offer you FRESH, LOCAL PRODUCE. POP Club on Tuesdays have been booming with youngsters participating in all of the activities. If you weren't able to attend last night, you missed DJ Huddy spinnin' the tunes, a corn-hole challenge, The United Way promoting the Duck Race, 2 Bite Club with Musall's, Soil and Conservation teaching about the layers of soil, with yes, dirt pudding! The next few weeks of POP Club are filled with some amazing activities, including Park Crafts, 2 Bite Club, Recycling is for the Birds and Vermi Composting. Music by Musall's will be DJing next week and don't forget August 8th our huge end of the year POP Club Bash (boy do we have some awesome things planned for those kiddos). August 7th - 13th is also National Farmers Market Week, be on the lookout for awesome Market Deals, Free Vouchers, Giveaways and Challenges! Good luck to all of the 4H Fair Contestants! Continue having a safe and fun summer! Remember to eat healthy, buy fresh, buy local!
